In Love with Lace

As a bridal shop we love all the beautiful fabrics that wedding dresses come in. But one of our very favourites that we continue to see year after year is lace. Why? Lace is often white or cream, and is a traditional bridal fabric both because of its colour and its elegance. Lace is also incredibly versatile: it can be classic or modern, subtle or bold, casual or formal. There’s a lace for every bride!

There are so many types of lace to choose from, all with a different look and feel. Alençon and Chantilly lace are intricate and formal with their own distinct floral patterns, while eyelet is a much more casual, summery choice. Guipire and venise are heavy embroidered styles, while point d’esprit and schiffli are lighter, tulle-like choices with a pattern in netted fabric. Overwhelmed by the choices and terms? We say choose what your eye is drawn to and what fits your overall style.

Lace can be incorporated into the look of a dress in so many ways. Some dresses just have lace edging or tiny lace cap sleeves, some go halfway with a lace bodice, while others have every inch covered in lace, including long lace sleeves à la Kate Middleton. Lace is particularly popular for brides who are going for a vintage feel – the right lace can set the tone in a vintage-look gown.

We also love to see lace used as a contrasting element in dresses. A darker colour of lace over an ivory or cream background – or an ivory lace over a darker silk – is a more modern look and creates beautiful depth and detail in a dress. And don’t forget that lace veil! From veils that are completely made of lace to those with lace edging, a lacy veil is a timeless accessory that will complete your look.

We see some type of lace in almost every style of gown we carry. From ballgowns to A-lines to fitted mermaid dresses, lace can become a stunning design detail no matter what type of dress you’re looking for. If there’s a particular style of lace that you’re drawn to, bring pictures of it to your bridal gown appointment so your consultant can help you find something similar.

Really love the look of lace? Make it part of your wedding theme! From invitations and other stationary to signage to centrepieces, lace is the perfect jumping-off point for your décor. Its classic look and intricate detail makes it a lovely detail that can be tied into almost every part of your day.

Loving the thought of a lace gown? We see a lot of lace from designers such as Maggie Sottero and Mori Lee, but all the designers we carry incorporate lace into many of their creations. Browse our Gown Gallery and find the lace you love, then come in to Bridal House to try them on in person!
